Living in Wellington Wellington has the advantage of small town living with close proximity to the major metropolitan city of Wichita. Wellington is easy to find, located just a few miles off the Kansas Turnpike I-35 in Sumner County.
Wellington was first surveyed on April 4, 1871 and named for the Duke of Wellington. It was designated as the permanent county seat of Sumner County in 1872. Today, Wellington is a thriving community looking eagerly into the 21st Century. The main business street in Wellington, Washington, runs along a ridge above the valley of Slate Creek and has several interesting turn-of-the-century buildings.
